But luckily for all involved, I'm more or less thinking straight now. So yes! HYBRID was sold in a 3-book deal to Harper Children's!!
Here's the PM announcement!
YAY!!! Can I just say for a moment how unbelievably amazing it is for me to hear that my book was pitched as THE GOLDEN COMPASS meets GIRL, INTERRUPTED?? If you know me at all, you know THE GOLDEN COMPASS is one of the books that got me wanting to write down these crazy stories in my head in the first place, so...wow. Just wow.
Okay, believe it or not, all this blabbering is actually lead up. I wrote up a post the day after HYBRID sold, and since I'm obviously not as straight-thinking as I'd like to believe at the moment, I'll just direct you to it:
~~~
Okay, so I don’t know when this post is going to go up because, as you might already know, sometimes authors have to wait quite a while before we’re allowed to announce a new book deal! But I’m writing this the day after I got the news so things are fresh on the mind—not that I don’t believe I won’t be remembering yesterday for...oh...the rest of my life? ;)
Also, I sort of needed to calm down first and convince myself that *just* because I got my book deal on Friday, April 1st *doesn’t* mean I’m going to get a call from my agent on Monday saying, “GOTCHA! April Fools!!” Because, seriously, I would have a heart attack and that’s not exactly conductive to the writing process.
BUT, by the time you all are reading this, it’ll probably be long past April 1st and I’ll have calmed down somewhat (or not) and only be somewhat screaming when I tell you that I’m going to be working with Kari Sutherland at Harper Children's and that I really couldn’t be more excited!!! Honestly. If I were any more blown away by all this, this post would have come out something like “ghkfktyomgbookdealahhhhhhharperchildren'somgomgomghybridahhhhghjg!!!!^%1” and you all would have been very, very confused. :)
I’m doubly thrilled because, looking back through my email records, I sent out an email to my fellow LTWF girls on April 9th, 2010 screaming “I’ve finished the first draft of HYBRID!!” So it’s almost been a year exactly since then! How cool is that? April (also, incidentally, the month of my birthday and some other important dates--I'll be twenty relatively soon) really is my lucky month, huh? :D
I don’t really know what else to say, haha. Well, I should rephrase that—I don’t know what else to say that’s actually relevant and interesting to people other than myself :). I could ramble on and on about how utterly awesome my agent, Emmanuelle, is and how lovely all the editors I spoke to were, and how much screaming the other LTWF girls and I did in the background over the ~3 weeks I was on subs, but that would take forever :)
So this is Kat signing off until next week. Look out for HYBRID coming out with Harper Children’s! I’m so, SO happy to have the chance to share this story with all of you.
~~~
Well, yeah, there you go :)

Huge congratulations! That's really, really amazing, and I'm so happy for you!

ReplyDeleteYayayay! For some reason I didn't even know you had an agent, despite following you for, like, a year *smacks self* THIS IS SO AWESOME!!
ReplyDeleteHahaha, no problem, lol! And I'm so happy you've been following for a year :) Thank you!!
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy for you. And now I get the joy of going back right to the first post on your blog and reading forward until I hit this point, a strange habit of mine which gives me much pleasure. I love reading posts which say things like 'Will this stupid manuscript ever be finished?' and 'Oh, will I ever get an agent?' when I know full well that in the future you WILL and will eventually get a publishing deal too. It cheers me up like nothing else. (Yes, I know it's weird. Sorry). But congratulations again!
ReplyDeleteOh, I love to do that too!! Especially for writers who are, you know, on the NY best sellers list now. It's so encouraging, isn't it, to go back and read the posts where they're like "OMG, this book sucks and it's never going to sell! I should just give up!"
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for coming by!!
Just saw the PW announcement, congratulations!

ReplyDeleteSo, so delighted for you Kat! Meg and I are happy dancing for you here in Australia! Party at our house!
ReplyDeleteCongrats!! The Golden Compass and Girl, Interrupted?? I loved both books, and I can't wait to read HYBRID for myself. Not only that, I am amazed by how you've gotten so far while being a pre-med in college -- especially since I'm pretty much in the same boat, and I can barely find time to balance all my academics and extracurriculars, never mind write/revise a novel! Girl, you are freaking awesome and such an inspiration!! :]
ReplyDelete@nhile Thank you!
ReplyDelete@Amie Haha, I wish I were there! ;) Gotta make that trip to Australia some time.
@Sophelia I love both, too! Thank you so much, and I wish you all the best in your studies and writing :D

ReplyDelete@Regan hahaha, thanks! :D
ReplyDelete@Brandimzieler Thank you! I can't wait for people to read it, too :)
CONGRAAAAAAAAAATSSSS!!!
ReplyDeleteEver since you put up an excerpt of HYBRID, I've wanted that book in my hand!! :D So yay to me too, eeeee!
Also, just had to get this out: YOU ARE AMAZINGGGGG FOR BEING ABLE TO BALANCE PRE-MED AND WRITING!
How ever do you do it?
Sincerely,
Di W.
Hi, Di W! haha, it's busy, but I try to fit it all in :P Thanks so much!
ReplyDeleteThat's fantastic! Huge Congratulations!!!
ReplyDeleteLyn
Thank you, Lynda :)

ReplyDeleteMAJOR excitement, Kat! Big congrats to you, and I can well imagine how thrilled and helium-filled you must feel right now! Best wishes; can't wait to read your book!! :)
ReplyDeleteThank you, Carol! :)
ReplyDeleteWow, what great news!! That would be the best April Fool's Day ever (as long as it wasn't a joke, which it obviously isnt). ;) Congratulations!
ReplyDeleteHaha, yeah. ;D Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteHi there! I've just followed over to your blog from Sarah's to say congratulations! That is definitely a milestone of an achievement, especially when you're a pre-med student, and so young! (I say this because I, too, am a pre-med student who writes by night; and oddly enough, of the same age.) It must be extremely flattering to have your novel pitched as THE GOLDEN COMPASS meets GIRL, INTERRUPTED—TGC is without fail my favorite fantasy novel, if not my favorite novel of all time (except perhaps its close second, THE AMBER SPYGLASS).
ReplyDeleteBut anyway, I'm rambling now; congratulations on your feat, and I wish you the best of luck and plenty of success. You have now become to me the model for what I shall strive to be.
Hi! Wow, we are pretty similar, aren't we ;) Thanks so much, and I'm so flattered to be a role model, haha
ReplyDeleteI'm a bit late on the congrats wagon, but yay! So excited for you. And I can't wait to read HYBRID :)
ReplyDeleteThanks!! I can't wait for it to come out, either ;D
